We're currently recruiting speakers to present at our monthly CE events. We're committed to finding passionate and knowledgeable speakers to offer educational talks on a wide variety of clinical topics that benefit the Austin AMFT Community.

Austin AMFT is particularly interested in presenting topics that are viewed through a systemic lens and that focus on how the work impacts the family system, community, or sociocultural spheres. Topics may be geared toward work with individuals, families or couples.

    No experience necessary, and bringing non-members is encouraged! Anyone who is interested in expanding the profession and willing to learn and play is welcome.

     How to Build Multicultural Awareness

    and Sensitivity in Your Practice

    PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

    When working in private practice or in an agency, it is very common to encounter clients with a different cultural background in need of mental health services. We need to be prepared to provide proactive and appropriate interventions that align with clients cultural preferences and values. In this talk you will learn and explore different multicultural interventions and approaches  from a person center and overall wellness perspective that will provide you with tools to increase multicultural awareness and sensitivity in your practice. 


    KEY LEARNING POINTS

    • The importance of having multicultural awareness and sensitivity in your practice 

    • How to genuinely listen to the client and ask questions to identify cultural preferences that promote rapport and treatment adherence. 

    • How to increase awareness of your own cultural background, customs, bias and attitudes.

    • Explore case scenarios where being multiculturally aware has been helpful in client recovery and overall wellness. 


    BIOGRAPHY

    Alejandra Cervantes is a fully licensed psychotherapy practitioner for Mexico, and is currently doing her LPC- Associate hours in Austin Texas, supervised by Ana Maria Cabezas LPC-S. Most of Alejandra's  experience focuses on individuals, couples, families and teens in the topics of anxiety and depressive disorders, life transition challenges, grief, first episode of psychosis, borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorders, as well as communication skills, career counseling and attachment and diverse challenges in family dynamics and interpersonal relationships. She currently works for a trauma informed center, as well as in her private practice Taking Action Bilingual.



    This presentation is designed to be useful for all levels of training and experience.

    PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

     LGBTQIA+ youth of color are at the intersection of at least two marginalized identities. Therapists who work with LGBTQIA+ must understand the marginalized identities that they hold to effectively work with them. In addition, therapists must know how to support the LGBTQIA+ youth of color that they are working with.


    KEY LEARNING POINTS

    • Understand what intersectionality is and how it appears for LGBTQ+ Youth of Color

    • Gain understanding of the unique experiences that LGBTQ+ Youth of Color.

    • Learn 3 ways to meaningfully support LGBTQ+ Youth of Color.


    BIOGRAPHY

    Joyce Miles Jacquote, LMFT-S, LCDC, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, is the founder and clinical director of Overcoming Miles Counseling, PLLC, a group practice offering telehealth therapy across Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Washington. Her practice specializes in serving romantic partners, queerplatonic partners, and families—however they define themselves—with a focus on inclusive, identity-affirming care. Joyce is especially passionate about working with the Black and Brown communities and Queer communities, bringing both clinical expertise and lived experience to her work.

    In addition to her therapy practice, Joyce provides clinical supervision to LMFT Associates and MFT graduate interns, and is a dedicated educator in the mental health field. She regularly gives presentations, appears on podcasts, and writes blogs to advance culturally responsive, accessible care and amplify marginalized voices in mental health spaces.
