      Invisible Population


      Presentation Description: 

      This presentation provides mental health clinicians with essential knowledge and tools for working effectively with brain injury survivors facing mental health concerns. We will outline the types of acquired brain injuries while examining the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges survivors frequently experience. The presentation will also address the limitations of standard counseling techniques and provide practical guidance on adapting interventions to better support cognitive and behavioral challenges while promoting more effective clinical care.


      Key learning points:

      1) How acquired brain injuries are defined and categorized

      2) The deficits, behaviors, and mental health concerns for survivors 

      3) How brain injury survivors and their families may present in counseling therapy settings

      4) Limitations of counseling techniques and approaches

      5) How to amend therapeutic interventions for cognitive deficits and behavioral challenges 


      Speaker bio: 

      Jennifer Bommer is a licensed professional counselor and brain injury specialist (CBIS) based in Austin, Texas. She is the founder of Texas Neurotrauma Counseling (TNC) and a dedicated advocate for advancements in the brain injury system of care. Jennifer completed training in cognitive rehabilitation from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and holds a certificate in concussion protocol from the Brain Injury Association of America. Jennifer’s work at TNC provides specialized counseling therapy and cognitive rehabilitation to people with all types of brain injuries across Texas. Outside of her private practice work, Jennifer currently serves on the board of the Brain Injury Association of Austin as well as the ACRM Chronic Brain Injury Task Force. She has previously served on the Advocacy & Policy Committee for the National Neurotrauma Society and remains active in both state-wide and national brain injury advocacy work. Jennifer also enjoys volunteering with the American Red Cross as a Service to the Armed Forces Resilience Workshop instructor.
